What is the ACLU?
The American Civil Liberties Union was founded in 1920 and is our nation’s guardian of liberty. The ACLU works in the courts, legislatures, and communities to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to all people in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States. How do I become a Guardian of Liberty?
You can become a Guardian of Liberty online or by calling us at 888-567-ACLU. The minimum gift from an ACLU monthly donor is $5 per month.
What are Guardians of Liberty (GOL)?
Guardians of Liberty are ACLU monthly donors who provide reliable support to enable the ACLU to respond immediately when new threats to our civil liberties arise. As a Guardian of Liberty, you help fuel the fight for our rights for the long haul.
Where does my money go?
Your generous monthly donation helps the ACLU vigorously defend people’s rights. From protecting the rights of immigrants and refugees, resisting assaults on voting rights, defending attacks against reproductive healthcare, fighting for LGBTQ equality, and so much more; your monthly donation enables litigation, lobbying and education.
As a Guardian of Liberty will I still need to renew my membership?
No. Your monthly pledge will automatically renew your ACLU membership, so you won’t have to worry about renewing as long as your pledge is active.
Are my monthly gifts tax-deductible?
No. Gifts to the ACLU’s Guardian of Liberty monthly giving program are not tax deductible. This is because donations in support of legislative advocacy (supporting specific bills that enhance civil liberties protections or opposing bills that seek to erode them) are not tax deductible. Legislative advocacy is an essential part of our work and gifts from our Guardians of Liberty allow us the greatest flexibility in our work and to respond to the most urgent needs.
When will I be charged?
The date you join as a monthly sustainer will be the date you are charged each month.
How can I change my donation or update my payment method?
You can change the amount of your monthly gift and change your payment method by calling us at 888-567-ACLU or by visiting aclu.org/GOLpayment. The minimum gift from an ACLU monthly donor is $5 per month.
Can I cancel?
Yes. You can cancel at any time by calling 888-567-ACLU. Please allow three business days for the cancellation to be processed.

What payment methods do you accept?
We accept payment by credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover), via automatic debit from your bank account, and by check.
Does the ACLU accept matching gifts?
Yes. If your company offers a matching gift program, contact your personnel office or matching gift coordinator and ask how to submit a matching gift request. You must make a gift to the ACLU Foundation for your gift to be eligible for your company’s match.
Does the ACLU offer gift memberships?
Yes. You can defend our fundamental rights by giving an ACLU Membership to a friend.
Can I make a gift in memory of someone special?
Yes. You can honor someone’s memory with a thoughtful gift in support of freedom, justice, and equality for all.
Can I make a gift in honor of a friend or loved one?
Yes. You can mark a special occasion and make a gift to advance freedom in honor of a friend or loved one.
Can I support the ACLU through the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC)?
Yes. As you are making decisions about your CFC, support the ACLU Foundation by designating #11890 on your pledge card.
How do I make a gift of stock or other securities?

How do I make a grant recommendation from my Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) to the ACLU?

What is the ACLU Impact Society?

I recently joined the ACLU but I haven’t received my card yet.
If you have recently become a member of the ACLU and are waiting to receive your member card in the mail, please note that it takes about three to four weeks to process a new membership application and card. If more than four weeks have passed and you have still not received your card, please call us at 888-567-ACLU.
Why do I get renewal and join mailings even though my membership is current?
The membership department sends out renewal notices before your membership expires to ensure there is no gap in your membership status. If you are concerned about notices you are receiving, please contact the ACLU’s membership department at 888-567-ACLU.
How do I update or correct my contact information with ACLU Membership?
To update or correct your mailing address, telephone number, and/or email address, please call us at 888-567-ACLU.

What is your refund policy?
Like most charitable organizations, the ACLU does not issue refunds. However, we recognize there may be occasions where a donation was made in error and we are happy to work with you to correct it. We will honor your request for a refund for donations made in error within 15 days of your donation date. Please contact us at 212-549-2500. Refunds are returned using the original method of payment.
